For the past two years I have volunteered at the Paralegal Cup which is an Intercollegiate Mooting Competition. I cannot possibly say enough about this event. We have seen the top students from around the province who have thoroughly impressed the paralegal and academic communities alike. This event has grown in popularity.
I am proud to have been part of this event in past years and am looking forward to volunteering again in 2015. One of my objectives and commitments to the Paralegal Cup Standing Committee is to try and recruit colleges and students to participate in this event.

EXCLUSIVE AND UNIQUE TO THE PARALEGAL CUP

Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN)

In 2015, the Paralegal Cup Steering Committee reached out to the Ontario Education Justice Network (OJEN) to establish a formal partnership. We worked alongside OJEN to offer 12 high-school student volunteers who expressed an interest in a legal career, the opportunity to gain volunteer hours and experience and interact with esteemed legal professionals and leading academics in the field. Moreover, two award-winning past Paralegal Cup competitors returned to serve in the role as Paralegal Cup Liasons for OJEN initiative.

Our goal is to continue to present an opportunity for high-school students to complete a portion of their mandatory community involvement hours. By volunteering in the competition, students can connect with post-secondary students and interact with leaders from the legal industry and academic worlds.

  • Fallon Burns

The purpose of a moot is to learn about a brand new kind of law, to become an expert in it, and then present before your senior community members, who then mentor you so you can improve your advocacy skills.

It is important that we have public events to show how productive we as paralegals are, and how we develop together and try to better ourselves.

This is an opportunity to move the profession forward, and to give students a sense of what advocating in front of a judge feels like.

Mooting teaches valuable lessons in thinking on your feet, analyzing an issue and dealing with incredible stress, and it’s an unforgettable experience for students.

The event is making history. How often do you get to be the first to do something?

  • Doug Taylor

There are two components to what makes mooting so appealing. The first is that you have a chance to stretch your academic abilities. It challenges you in the area of law. It gives you a chance to argue law at its very highest level, a Constitutional level law.

The second component is the opportunity for students to hone their skills in a safe environment, where no clients' jeopardy is on the line. The competition is an opportunity to interact with senior mentors from the paralegal community, where they can impart some of their practical knowledge to the students.

The Paralegal Cup Mooting competition has benefited me in a number of ways. It has prepared me for my career, it gave me the practical skills and experiences needed to be a licensed paralegal, but also in the sense of making those connections.

And it led me where I am today, as a licensed Paralegal working with George Brown Professional Corporation. I hope that many students are lucky enough to be in that position and that this continues every year.

  • Sara Liden

This event helps students learn to become better advocates. It helps challenge their ability to think on their feet, to understand the law, and to understand the challenges we throw at them in court.

They have to learn new areas of law that they have never learned before, in a very short period of time and then speak as professionals.

In turn, it helps the larger community because the paralegals that they hire to bring on their cases and defend them, will be better prepared for whatever they may face.
